Geographical Indications and traditional knowledge

We have a wide range of experience protecting and enforcing Geographical Indications (GIs) in each of the various jurisdictions in which we operate.

Cases in which we have been involved range from the drafting, protection, prosecution and registration of GIs to taking action against their unlawful use. In some countries, such as Thailand we have also been heavily involved in assisting authorities in the drafting of GI legislation. Fabrice Mattei and Dr. Akkharawit of the Thailand office are recognized as leading international GI experts and have been appointed by various international organizations such as WIPO to work with the Thai government on a project for the identification, protection and promotion of various Thai GIs. Fabrice Mattei is also the ASEAN consultant to the CIVC (Champagne), BNIC (Cognac) and National Institute of Appellation of Origin of France (INAO). He has been advising and obtained the registration of various geographical indications such as Champagne, Cognac, Scotch whisky, Napa Valley, Thai Hom Mali rice in key countries in Asia and Europe. He also closely works with local communities to enhance the protection of their natural products and traditional knowledge.
